Learn if You're Eligible for Housing Deposit Assistance

May 02, 2025

Did you know that homelessness is on the rise in the United States and, on any given night, up to 650,000 people, or more, experience homelessness?

If you’ve experienced homelessness or you’re determined to avoid becoming part of these numbers, but the price of entry into housing is too high thanks to the rental deposit, we want you to know that there’s help.

At Harmony Homes for Healing, which is a nonprofit organization that aims to end homelessness and housing insecurity, we can help break down that barrier to entry through housing deposit assistance.

The steep price to entry for housing in California

The need for services like housing deposit assistance is essential for vulnerable populations who face housing insecurity.

It can be frustrating to find a place you want to call your own, and even if the rent is affordable, the deposit is another matter entirely. California residents already have it tough given that we have one of the highest average rental prices — about $2,500 compared to the national average of $1,645.

When you throw in a deposit, which is typically one or two times the rent, you find you’re unable to get your foot in the door.

Getting help for your deposit

At Harmony Homes for Healing, our primary goal is to get people in need into safe housing. From victims of domestic violence to veterans who don’t have stable housing, we provide transitional housing that’s safe and comfortable so that people can figure out their next steps.

And we’re here to help with those next steps in the form of housing deposit assistance. We work with federal, state, and local entities, such as the Public Housing Authority and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, to eliminate the hurdles to safe and stable housing, which includes the deposit.

It’s difficult to say here whether you might qualify for housing deposit assistance because it very much depends upon each person’s situation, such as income, size of the family, and the present circumstances.

We can say that certain factors may increase your eligibility, such as:

  • Being elderly
  • Being pregnant
  • Having a disability
  • Having a family with young children
  • Being a caregiver for kids or the elderly

In other words, your circumstances and the number of people involved can influence your ability to get housing deposit assistance.

Rest assured, no matter your circumstances, if a deposit stands between you and stable housing, we leave no stone unturned to get you through the door.
